Megan Wood
Fine Artist

Welcome to the work of Megan Wood
Through a process led by instinct, materiality, and memory, Megan creates layered, atmospheric paintings that blend photography with abstraction. Using oil, acrylic, and mixed media, her work explores contrast - between focus and blur, light and shadow, texture and flatness. Each piece unfolds gradually, inviting you to pause, look closely, and find meaning in the details that emerge over time.

ABOUT THE ARTIST
Megan Wood is an Edinburgh-based artist who studied at the Glasgow School of Art and completed her Foundation Degree in Art and Design at Duncan of Jordanstone College of Art & Design in Dundee. Her work has been exhibited in various group and solo exhibitions and is held in private collections as well as public-facing spaces including The Scotsman Hotel, Nor’ Loft Rooftop Bar and Champagne Lounge, Radisson Blu in Glasgow, and Sofitel London.
Megan’s practice explores the tension between abstraction and memory, often using photography, particularly photo negatives, cyanotypes, and flash photography - as a visual and conceptual starting point. She is drawn to images that are partially obscured or distorted: moments that are half-seen, fading, or caught mid-transition. This sense of ambiguity and atmosphere translates into her painting process.
She works intuitively with materials such as oil, acrylic, ink, charcoal, and oil bars -often combining them to explore texture and surface in innovative ways. Through layering, collaging, and gestural mark-making, Megan encourages the materials to interact unpredictably. The resistance of oil paint to water-based layers creates broken edges, pooled pigments, and sediment-like textures that evoke an aged or weathered feel. By incorporating elements like sand or salt, she builds tactile surfaces that add a raw, grounded quality to her work. Some areas emerge in sharp focus while others dissolve into blur, creating a dynamic tension between clarity and abstraction across the linen surface.
Megan often contrasts bold, high-flash colour with muted or neutral tones, drawing on the language of photography while allowing for moments of painterly intuition. Her compositions develop organically, responding to the materials and surfaces as they evolve. Though there are traces of narrative, place, or memory, the intention is not to illustrate something fixed - but to evoke a feeling that’s familiar, fleeting, and just out of reach.
